Screen protector adds an extra layer of protection to your screen. Most smartphones are already made of Corning’s Gorilla Glass. While that makes it scratch-resistant, they are not scratch-proof. They help protect screens from scratches, which weaken the structural integrity of a display and may eventually lead to large cracks. 

Prevention (screen protector ) is always better than a cure (a new screen)
